• About a year ago, I was watching a Twitch stream (probably KingGothalion or LobosJr) and thinking to myself, why can't I do that? What does it take to become a personality and deliver high-end skill-driven content with optimal quality? I knew I had at least one of those things, but missing the latter. I came from a background of live music entertainment and video editing (5+ years experience on both ends) so by no means was I a master of the trades, but I wasn't completely ignorant to what I needed. Fast forward to a shower epiphany and a fat wallet from working 40 hour holiday weeks. I went googling and seeing reviews on various products, having already sold my Elgato from the older YouTube days, and stumbled upon Razer's website where I saw the tab for "Broadcaster". Was this fate, or simply a huge coincidence? I clicked, and saw a bundled deal of $449.99 for three beautiful looking devices. At first I didn't see how much of a deal this could possibly be. Comparatively, the Razer Ripsaw & Seiren microphone were $179.99 each, and the Stargazer camera was $149.99. All three devices together added up to roughly $510, so the deal bundle was SORT of a deal. $60 isn't the greatest mark down, especially when we're nearly breaking half a thousand. Either way, I was eager and it looked like exactly what I was looking for. Oh boy, this was the absolute wrong choice. I should state that the devices themselves aren't terrible, by no means! And as I said in the pros, each is outfitted and designed ergonomically with the streamer's various set-ups in mind. The problem is simply just the quality and delivery of each peripheral. The first hassle I had to deal with was how impossible the Ripsaw was to work with. My computer would not pick up the video card's signal, and this issue persisted for hours and finally into the night which made me believe I had a faulty card. Eventually, I had to uninstall Razer Synpase completely, reinstall, and then manually go into the unrecognizable device, uninstall, unplug, replug, update Razer Synpase, and then finally the correct drivers downloaded. This was a debacle that shouldn't require an external program handling the downloads & the device being manually uninstalled, as not every person understands computer components and processes. Secondly, while the Razer Seiren works well enough, it lacks the punch and crisp clarity of cheaper mics like the AT 2020 or Rode NT-USB microphones. While the various vocal sets such as duel, cardoid, omnidirectional, and such make sense, neither sounds that great. It just simply meets minimum expectations, and hardly so for a device that costs roughly TWICE as much or about a quarter as much as their competitor. Finally, the Stargazer has the most function and usage. Relatively wonderful camera with great picture under the right lighting, but beware if you use this under 1080 60 FPS, the picture will suffer greatly. The background removal technology also lacks and isn't nearly as useful as a backdrop or green screen. So to summarize all my hardship, do yourself a favor future broadcasters, simply go the cheaper and smart route with an Elgato HD60, an AT2020, and a Logitech C9 series webcam. You'll save about half of what I spent, for just as optimal quality and reliability. I use to love Razer, but as in my Dark Souls runs, the fire fades.
